La Valentina Montepulciano d’Abruzzo DOC (2009) secondo the Independent Wine Review

12 febbraio 2013

Sabatino Di Properzio has been producing Montepulciano d’Abruzzo for 23 years now at the La Valentina

winery in Spoltore, Abruzzo. Modern in style, the wines of La Valentina have done much to help partially

change the image of wine from Abruzzo from one of rusticity to one of a more polished expression of the

grape varieties upon which a wine is based.

Dedicated to high quality since establishment, the La Valentina winery cultivates the Montepulciano vines

that produced the fruit destined for this 2009 La Valentina Montepulciano d’Abruzzo without the

application of any chemicals, utilising rigorous yield reduction techniques and using fully renewable energy sources. The result of this is 30 hectares of Montepulciano vines that produce enough high qualityfruit to make around 200,000 bottles of this La Valentina Montepulciano d’Abruzzo each year.

This La Valentina Montepulciano d’Abruzzo is consequently the most important wine for the La Valentina winery (accounting for around three quarters of the winery’s production each vintage) and this 2009 LaValentina Montepulciano d’Abruzzo saw fermentation in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks, priorto maturation for twelve months in a mix of stainless steel tanks, glass-lined cement tanks and oakbarrels.

Bottled 15 months after the harvest, this 2009 La Valentina Montepulciano d’Abruzzo remains the current vintage on release in the UK at this time.

In the glass this 2009 La Valentina Montepulciano d’Abruzzo is an intense ruby red colour that shows off the typical alcoholic content of this wine (13.5% abv) in the form of easily visible alcoholic legs when it iss wirled.

Aromatically more balanced than some “mass produced” Montepulciano (which can tend towards anunder-ripe red fruit character) this 2009 La Valentina Montepulciano d’Abruzzo shows softer edgedaromas of ripe dark cherry and plum flavours. A hint of sootiness and the merest hint of clove hint at thetwelve months maturation in oak that 20% of this 2009 La Valentina Montepulciano d’Abruzzoexperienced.

Dry and fairly full bodied in the mouth, you get a lot more ripe and jammy fruit than you would expecthere. Dark cherry and plums remain the most prominent flavoural cues in this 2009 La Valentina Montepulciano d’Abruzzo, with a hint of liquorice and clove also adding nuance. The tannins of this 2009 La Valentina Montepulciano d’Abruzzo are relatively structured, but soft and nicely enveloped by the fruitcomponents of this wine.

The acidity level of this 2009 La Valentina Montepulciano d’Abruzzo ischaracteristically high and this cleanses the palate during the finish, which is of moderate length.Notably accomplished for an “entry level” Montepulciano, this 2009 La Valentina Montepulcianod’Abruzzo is impressive now or it could be cellared through to 2016.

La Valentina Montepulciano d’Abruzzo DOC (2009) Score: 86/100 – This 2009 La Valentina Montepulciano d’Abruzzo is an exciting “entry level”Montepulciano from the La Valentina winery. The achievement of this 2009 La Valentina Montepulcianod’Abruzzo is especially impressive given the quantity produced.Value for Money: 7/10 – Priced from £11.50 in wine merchants in the UK, this 2009 La ValentinaMontepulciano d’Abruzzo might be more expensive than much “entry level” Montepulciano d’Abruzzo butis also much better.Labels: Abruzzo, Fattoria La Valentina, Italy, Montepulciano D’Abruzzo DOC, Wine Review. Saturday, 5 January 2013

La Valentina Montepulciano d’Abruzzo (2009) secondo Cheap Wine Snobs

12 febbraio 2013

Lovely Montepulciano D’Abruzzo… I just want to say that name over and over! I’ve always liked these wines made from the Montepulciano grape .They remind me of driving around Tuscany and staying at local villas. Well I tried this La Valentina wine at Il Bosco.. .It was light, flavorful with lot’s of berries and some earthiness showing the local terreno… Bravo Bill (the owner) thanks for the great pour at a decent price… and your  addition to our community! great food and pizza  Ciao!

The Year In Wine, il nostro Montepulciano tra i Best Values del 2012 di Forbes.com

7 gennaio 2013

I love Italian wines, and when seeking value I often simply look beyond the most well-known, past the Chianti Classic, Brunello and Super Tuscans to the more regional wines such as Barbera d’ Asti and in this case a Montepulciano d’Abruzzo I stumbled upon this year, using Montepulciano vines planted on the Adriatic coast. It’s a perfect pasta wine with a ruby red color, just a hint of wood aging (20% gets wood), full-bodied but not aggressively fruity, a bit more tart and black pepper, perfect for hard cheeses and tomato sauce. Under $14.
